As this year wraps up I had more states lined up to travel to, to share in stories of veteran homelessness however due to unforeseen circumstances I had to cancel 4 trips planned through the end of this year. With that being said I’m humbly grateful for what i have and I’m thankful for the veterans I have met living on the streets because their stories remind me daily to appreciate the small things and for I have rather what I don’t have.
While being in the same cove as the previous two others. I met “the king of the cove” as they all called him. He had the most fish already caught (9). For every cast of his spinning rod he would catch a fish. So I asked will you eat all of these fish and he said no. I asked well how do you keep all of them fresh and he said my job, which made me raise and eyebrow after hearing of his homelessness, he replied is to feed those that can’t feed themselves that I not living on the streets.
He told me since Vietnam I will alway take care of those under me and those that don’t have the resources or skills to fend for themselves. As a former Airborne Army Ranger he said I have enough training and skills to survive and have done so for over 20 yrs. He said living out of a van isn’t ideal but being in Florida doing this, as he point to the vast open cove of plentiful fishing ahead of him makes it worth it.
