All veterans have faces but not all faces want to be seen to share with their stories. While bundled up and battling the wind cutting my eyes to the point tears were coming down my face, I saw a similar face to mine just as bundled with the only thing showing was green eyes. I stopped and asked was this her place for the evening and she said yes. Her name is Jessica, of Ohio served in the US Navy in the Supply Corp on USS Kitty Hawk and deploying to Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, Arabian Gulf and served from 98-08. After she exited from the Navy, she said that she was in love with a senior leader who took advantage of her kindness ultimately leaving her in a tough situation and with the unfortunate circumstance left her with nothing. She wouldn’t go into detail, but I could tell that the situation caused her much pain. I asked her how long she had been on the streets and she said a while, longer than a year. The way she was bundled up she told me she uses the multiple layers to appear manly as a way to deter other men. She said living on the streets you are susceptible to sexual harassment and rape and she has been in situations where she has had to flee to avoid it. She said it comes with living on the streets. Jessica said during the daylight hours she takes off most of the layers but at night in the winter all she wants to do is show her eyes speaking to no one. She told me I just happened to catch her in the transition of setting up her place for the evening. Jessica said back in the day she was a tough cookie and with no children and family she gave herself a goal of 1 year before she is off the streets.
