A man of great service of rich in history and tradition was shocking to me to see a man who was a part of the legendary 10th Cavalry Division barley has suitable living conditions. He went on to explain this unit was created as a segregated black unit, the 10th Cavalry was one of the original Buffalo Soldiers. Given the name because the black troops were described as having course tough hair like the buffalos and courageous tough fighters, but he said he knew it was due to their fierce, brave nature which reminded them of the way buffalos fought. He knew his history as he told me that the black and gold on which the buffalo stands are "the color of the negro" and the "refined gold" which the regiment represents.
When I told him, I was at 1st ID he told me that the Buffalos soldiers went to Ft Riley in 1867. Bert a man that served with this unit as a medic served in the Vietnam War saw combat as he describes as vicious, appalling and downright sad to lose all the men he did. As a medic he now struggles with his own health living in Detroit. He said this late in life he doesn’t fight for things veterans are fighting for. He told me when he got back from Nam, he was then stationed at 25th ID, Scofield Barracks in Hawaii where he continued to serve as a medic training soldiers what they learned in Nam. He told me that his family had men who served with the Harlem Fighters another historic black unit.
