There are such good people out and around you, you just have to be kind, stop to talk to them. After walking around and not finding any one I determined that with the temperatures being under freezing I needed help. I ran across Steven in downtown Boston and asked to buy him a coffee if he could help me and he obliged. Steven was in the United States Navy from 1996-2000 where he served after the Persian Gulf. He described his ship as a Frigate one of the smaller ships in the Navy fleet and called it the FFG61. He told me that he enjoys the streets a lot better in the summertime because in the winter is when he typically loses a lot of friends to the cold temperatures and illnesses.
Great Lakes Chicago is where he did his basic training and after the completion, he went off to Lackland Airforce Base. Born and raised in Lawrence Massachusetts he calls Boston home. After we talked for about half an hour, he went on to show me a few of his friends that were veterans. A few veterans that he introduced me to hung out in the new Boston Celtics arena during the daytime while undergoing construction and others congregated in the area of the New England Veterans Shelter.
Most of the veterans he introduced me to were waiting to get on the list to get some type housing and just being near other veterans. He introduced me to a young 23 year old Muay Tai fighter who served in the Airforce that was homeless living on the streets. Briefly told me that he wasn’t in the mood to talk however he didn’t want to go back to his home of Puerto Rico because of the conditions that living out here on the Boston Streets was a lot better.
