Those us who have served understand what we have been through, trained for, and sacrificed. Veterans call themselves the 1%. We don’t identify as black or white, rather we are all green! Maurice served in the United States Navy during a time when, as he describes when he could only serve as a cook. He said he couldn’t get much from choices from his entrance into the Navy. Maurice said that last night while trying to earn money he made his way through trying to dump trash in ally’s for companies who would provide him a meal in exchange. So this was his time to sleep. When I approached him he could barely keep his eyes open and in his eyes I could see pure exhaustion. This was the moment I decided to photograph.
