Scott was standing outside of a coffee shop in Seattle Washington smoking as I was about to pass he said you a photographer and I replied yes. I told him I was in search of veterans who lived on the streets and his response was you are talking to one. Scott said that he was an old army medic serving with the Army National Guard from 81-87. He said he was attached to a field artillery unit and one of the things he found fascinating was setting the charges on the 105mm round and listening to them talk about quadrant and reflection. He went on to tell me about his time at Fort Seal where he made the best of friends.
Scott said that he currently had two hernias that needed put back in and that he was seeking treatment at local hospitals but kept getting denied. He went on to show me his protruding stomach that he was struggling with. He told me after his service overseas in Korea that he struggles with PTSD and a few other issues he didn’t mention. Scott said that the government trained me and that he won’t let his skills go to waste but just about every night he goes to the dumpsters and waste bins of hospitals and gets medical supplies to help those on the streets that need medical attention. He said you’d be surprised what hospitals throw away. I asked when he isn’t helping others what does he like to do, and he told me play my guitar and sing to myself.
